Hugh Sam – Born in British Guiana, South America in 1934, Mr. Sam earned his Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the Manhattan School of Music and did post-graduate work with American composer, Robert Starer, at Brooklyn College. He was Musical Director of the Broadway musical, “The Fantastiks” when it was performed in Guyana and was also Musical Director of the Guyana Police Choir when it participated in Expo ‘67in Motreal. He wrote two musicals while in Guyana and secured prizes in composition and piano at their music festivals. He also participated in a jazz album while in Guyana. His interest has always been in producing concert arrangements of the folksongs of Guyana and the Caribbean. He has arranged the folksongs of Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and St. Lucia for both piano solo and piano duet. He has also written five Caribbean Rhapsodies for piano and orchestra utilizing these folksongs. The Trinidadian Rhapsody, which was rearranged for piano and Steel Orchestra, was performed in Trinidad in 2004. Mr. Sam has also written arrangements of popular songs in the style of classical composers. His output includes compositions for piano, voice, cello flute, chamber music groups and orchestra. Mr. Sam is a faculty member at Third Street Music School Settlement.

Founded in 1894, Third Street Music School Settlement is the nation’s oldest community music school. Each year, its faculty of more than one hundred teaching artists provides quality instruction in music, dance and the visual arts to some 3,500 children, regardless of artistic ability or financial means, both on site and in public schools across Lower Manhattan. Third Street also offers music instruction to adults of all ages and levels, and serves as a cultural resource to the larger community by presenting more than 250 performances by students, faculty and guest artists throughout the year, all free of charge and open to the public.
